It's a mailing list service, like YahooGroups. They also provide file 
exchange, calendars, etc., but no convenient way to share information.

Moreover, these are commercial services financed by advertising. And they 
don't promise anything, in particular not the preservation of your data.

We already have a mailing list under our own control, which I prefer. I don't 
think the additional services of SmartGroups are of much use to us.
