Dear FSAtom Committee members,
Some news ... and request for suggestions ...
1) Organisation of scientific events
Our CECAM proposals for the tutorial and the workshop
have been accepted ! Also, the additional requests for funding for the
tutorial to the Psi-k and SIMU networks have been accepted.
These are scheduled :
- Tutorial 8-10/10/2003
- Workshop 13-15/10/2003
It might be possible to organize a FSAtom "general assembly" on the
Saturday 11/10/2003, to make strategic choices, and renew the committee.
2) The Web site (http://www.fsatom.org)
All the planned functionalities are there :
- mailing lists
- list of software for atomic scale computations (about 60 are listed)
- list of links to software tools
The mailing list has been initialized in October with the list of
participants to the CECAM workshop (about 25 participants), then it grew
alone, and reached 60 participants recently. Then I have added
some mail adresses of people that I have been talking with,
and were interested by the project. Now, it is about 80 participants.
Moreover, Konrad has set up a "Wiki", that should allow the committee
or workgroups to organize efficiently the sharing of (work) documents.
3) Advertisement of FSAtom
As you might remember (you had a copy),
Karsten Jakobsen, Gilles Zerah, Konrad Hinsen
and I had written a note (rather similar to the CECAM report) on FSAtom,
submitted to the SIMU network electronic newsletter. Unfortunately,
the corresponding issue of this newsletter has not yet been finalized.
But I was assured that it would be (soon ?!).
On the other hand, we have also submitted the same paper (with minor
modifications) to the psi-k network newsletter
(hoping it will come out faster than in SIMU !).
So, now it is clear that :
- the tutorial and workshop have to be organized ...
- these news should be advertised to the FSAtom mailing list ...
My requests for suggestions are related to some related
tasks to be done :
(1) I have appended below the current list of person registered
on the mailing list.
In the case you know somebody that should obviously belong to that list,
but is not there, could you either contact him (so that
he can register - start from http://www.fsatom.org),
or send his e-mail address to Miguel or me ?
(2) After about 10 days, I plan to send the tutorial and workshop
announcements to the mailing list. Any suggestion ?
(3) We planned to have workgroups on selected topics. Obviously,
the mailing lists and Web sites were a prerequisite for real work.
*** So, are there suggestions for the procedure to start working groups ? ***
*** Who might have time in the forthcoming weeks/months to start one ? ***
(this last question might be sent to the whole miling list)
Actually, at the end of the CECAM workshop, we asked for volunteers,
and put names. We might stick to these propositions, but it might
as well be worth to reevaluate the propositions, 7 months after the meeting ...
(4) By the way, CECAM workshop discussions, or recent discussions with
several people, including some of you,
point to the fact that a standard format for pseudopotentials would
be invaluable to the community. It might be a strong point of the
forthcoming workshop : a common proposal from a workgroup
on this topics, or a session on this topics. So, the set-up of a
workgroup on this topics might be prioritary ...
Thanks in advance for your advices (please, within 10 days)
Best regards,
Xavier
