Xavier,

What was the problem and how does this fix it?  I don't see how the changes
you made have any effect.

I had thought the problem causing the segfault must be rather that sb%dim is
not initialized correctly.  I got segfaults occasionally on Friday from
derivatives_grad and cube_function_inc which I think came from that, but
which were not reproducible enough to track down.
