Symmetry properties of two-dimensional photonic crystals

Abstract: A symmetry analysis of photonic bands in two-dimensional photonic crystals with triangular structure is performed starting from the empty lattice, in analogy with the crystal classification of electronic states in solids. The reflectivity of a 2D photonic crystal is calculated is calculated and is shown to yield the dispersion of photonic bands. The relevant selection rules are derived from symmetry considerations.
