A method to synthesize and tailor carbon nanotubes by electron irradiation in the TEM

Abstract: This paper reviews the synthesis of carbon nanotubes (CNT) from amorphous carbon thin films by electron irradiation in the transmission electron microscope (TEM) and shows that by controlling the current density on such a CNT, its structure can be modified and controlled. We propose that irradiation effects impart a tensile stress and introduce defects to a CNT thus formed and show that the CNT can be made to fracture by a brittle or ductile mechanism, with the ductile mechanism involving the formation of a linear chain of carbon atoms. In some cases, a dramatic healing of the carbon film is observed after some critical amount of accumulated irradiation damage is reached.
